In the first quarter of 2022, the top 5 sandbox games in the United States displayed interesting trends in their performance metrics. Here’s a closer look at how Roblox, Minecraft, Rec Room: Play with Friends, Growtopia, and Terraria performed according to Sensor Tower data.

Roblox from Roblox Corporation experienced a peak in weekly revenue at the start of the year, hitting approximately $14.7M in the final week of December. Throughout the quarter, its revenue fluctuated, with a notable low of around $8.3M in late January and a slight recovery to $9.1M by the end of March. Weekly downloads started strong at 748K but gradually declined to around 480K by the end of the quarter. Active users saw a slight dip from 22.9M at the start of the year to around 21.2M by the end of March.

Minecraft from Mojang showed a consistent revenue stream throughout Q1 2022, peaking at $2.3M in late December and ending the quarter at approximately $1.2M. Downloads for Minecraft saw a significant increase mid-quarter, from 92.6K in early January to around 176K in late February. Active users remained relatively stable, starting at 13.2M and ending at around 11.3M.

Rec Room: Play with Friends by Rec Room Inc. experienced a varied revenue pattern, beginning the quarter with around $80K and fluctuating to approximately $52K by the end of March. Downloads saw a decline from 345K in late December to around 159K by the end of the quarter. Active users also followed a downward trend, starting at 528K and ending at 359K.

Growtopia from Ubisoft had a more modest performance. Revenue peaked at approximately $47K in late December and dwindled to around $11K by the end of March. Downloads remained low throughout the quarter, starting at 845 and ending at 386. Active users slightly decreased from 15.7K to around 13K.

Finally, Terraria by 505 Games (US), Inc. saw its highest revenue of about $38K in late December, which then decreased to roughly $15K by the end of March. Downloads also saw a decline from 6.8K to 6.4K across the quarter. Active users remained relatively stable, fluctuating around 27K.
